Few things sour a gardener's morning like finding a row of seedlings reduced to stumps overnight. Slugs and snails are the most complained-about garden pests in Britain, yet the instinct to eliminate them entirely is both impossible and counterproductive. The realistic goal is to protect the plants that matter most while keeping the garden's wider ecology working for you rather than against you.
Why slugs and snails matter more than you think
The UK is home to around 40 species of slug, and only a minority cause serious damage to garden plants. Many feed mainly on decaying material, algae, fungi and dead vegetation, doing valuable work as decomposers. The leopard slug (Limax maximus), for instance, eats rotting matter and even preys on other slugs. Molluscs are also a crucial food source for hedgehogs, song thrushes, frogs, toads, slow worms and ground beetles. A garden with no slugs at all would be a garden that struggles to support any of those animals.
This is why the Royal Horticultural Society no longer classifies slugs and snails simply as pests. The practical implication is straightforward: aim to manage damage in the places where it hurts, not to wage total war across the whole plot.
What actually gets eaten — and what doesn't
Slug damage is heavily concentrated on a fairly short list of plants. Knowing it saves an enormous amount of frustration.
High-risk plants
- Hostas (except some thick-leaved cultivars), delphiniums and lupins
- Dahlias, especially young shoots emerging in May
- Seedlings of almost anything, particularly lettuce, brassicas and French beans
- Sweet peas and sunflowers at the seedling stage
- Potato tubers, attacked underground by keeled slugs in late summer
Plants slugs largely leave alone
- Hardy geraniums (Geranium species), astrantia and Alchemilla mollis
- Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), rosemary and most aromatic Mediterranean herbs
- Ferns, ornamental grasses and Astilbe
- Foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea), aquilegia and hellebores
- Penstemon, salvias and Verbena bonariensis
If a bed is repeatedly stripped, the most honest long-term fix is to plant more from the second list and grow the vulnerable favourites where you can defend them — in raised containers, or planted out only once they are large enough to withstand some grazing. A dahlia planted out in June at 30cm tall will usually outgrow damage that would kill a 5cm shoot in April.
Cultural controls: timing and tidiness
Slugs need moisture and shelter, and you control both to a surprising degree.
- Water in the morning, not the evening. Evening watering leaves the soil surface wet all night, exactly when slugs are active. Morning watering lets the surface dry by dusk and measurably reduces night-time grazing.
- Raise seedlings to a defensible size. Sow in modules on a bench or windowsill and plant out sturdy young plants rather than direct-sowing into open ground where germinating seedlings are most vulnerable.
- Think about tidiness honestly. Clearing pots, boards and dense weedy cover next to vulnerable beds removes daytime hiding places. But a completely sterile garden also removes habitat for the ground beetles and frogs that eat slugs. A sensible compromise is to keep the immediate vicinity of vegetable beds and seedlings clear, while leaving log piles and leaf litter in wilder corners well away from them.
- Hand collection works. An hour after dusk with a torch, on a mild damp evening between March and October, removes the individuals actually doing the damage. It is unglamorous but genuinely effective if done regularly.
Barriers: what testing actually shows
Barrier products are heavily marketed and mostly disappointing. Trials, including work by the RHS, have found that copper tape, crushed eggshells, sharp grit, bark mulch and wool pellets make little or no measurable difference to slug damage on vulnerable plants. A determined slug will cross all of them, particularly in wet weather when the surfaces stop being abrasive or dry.
That said, physical exclusion in a stricter sense does work: a cloche or a cut-down plastic bottle over an individual seedling is a genuine barrier, and growing hostas in tall smooth-sided containers, raised off the ground and away from walls, reduces damage substantially. The principle is that barriers which merely inconvenience slugs fail, while barriers that physically prevent access succeed.
Beer traps
Beer traps do catch slugs — the yeast smell is genuinely attractive — but they only draw individuals from a metre or so away, so they protect a small area at best. Sink a container so the rim sits about 1–2cm above the soil surface; a rim flush with the soil also drowns ground beetles, which is self-defeating. Empty and refill every few days. Treat beer traps as a supplement around a prized plant, not a whole-garden solution.
Nematodes: effective, with conditions
The biological control Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita is a microscopic nematode watered onto the soil, where it infects and kills slugs. It is genuinely effective, but only under the right conditions:
- Soil temperature must be above about 5°C, so applications work from roughly March to October.
- The soil must stay moist for two weeks after application.
- It works underground, so it is particularly good against the keeled slugs that damage potatoes, and less useful against large snails on walls and fences.
- Protection lasts around six weeks, so time an application for when vulnerable plants go out — typically April or May, with a second in early summer if needed.
Nematodes are safe for pets, birds, hedgehogs and other wildlife, which makes them the best heavy-duty option for a vegetable plot with a serious slug problem.
Pellets: ferric phosphate yes, metaldehyde no
Metaldehyde slug pellets were banned from outdoor use in Great Britain from April 2022 because of the risk they posed to birds, mammals and water quality. If you find an old box in the shed, do not use it; dispose of it via your council's household hazardous waste service.
Ferric phosphate pellets remain legal and are approved for organic growing. Iron(III) phosphate stops slugs feeding within hours, and they die out of sight underground. Used correctly — scattered thinly at the pack rate, around 5 pellets per plant rather than the moat of blue most people pour — they carry far less wildlife risk. They still should not be treated as harmless confetti: use them sparingly, only around vulnerable plants, and only during the danger window in spring.
Recruit the predators
The cheapest long-term slug control is a garden that supports the animals that eat them.
- Hedgehogs need access: a 13cm square gap in fences (a "hedgehog highway") lets them patrol several gardens a night. Avoid pellets scattered widely, and never use metaldehyde.
- Song thrushes specialise in snails, hammering them open on stone "anvils". Berrying shrubs and undisturbed corners encourage them.
- Frogs and toads arrive remarkably quickly if you add even a small pond — a container pond of 60cm across, with a sloping escape route, is enough to start.
- Ground beetles eat slug eggs and small slugs. They shelter under logs, stones and in tussocky grass, which is the strongest argument for leaving some untidiness at the garden's edges.
- Ducks, for those with the space, are famously enthusiastic slug hunters, though they will also trample and sample your vegetables.

No single measure solves slugs. Resistant planting plus morning watering plus targeted protection of the vulnerable few, with nematodes or ferric phosphate held in reserve, keeps damage tolerable — and keeps the thrushes singing.
