Common rose problems: black spot, mildew, rust and aphids

Guidance is written for UK gardens and the UK climate. How we research and check our advice.

Roses reward attention like few other garden plants, but they also collect ailments: black spot stripping the leaves by July, powdery mildew dusting the shoots, rust underneath the foliage and aphids clustering on every soft tip. The good news is that most rose problems are predictable, identifiable at a glance, and manageable without reaching for a sprayer every weekend.

Identifying the big four

Accurate identification matters because the treatments differ. Here is what you are actually looking at.

Black spot

Caused by the fungus Diplocarpon rosae. Rounded purple-black blotches with fringed edges appear on leaves, usually starting low on the plant from May onwards. Affected leaves yellow and drop, and a badly hit rose can be half-bare by August. It thrives in warm, wet summers.

Powdery mildew

Caused by Podosphaera pannosa. A white, powdery coating on young leaves, buds and shoot tips, often distorting growth. Unlike most fungal diseases it is worst on dry roots with humid air around the top of the plant — classic conditions for roses grown against warm walls or in crowded borders.

Rust

Caused by Phragmidium species. Bright orange pustules on the undersides of leaves in spring and summer, turning black by late summer. The upper surface shows yellowish speckling. Severe infections defoliate the plant. Rust is less common than black spot but harder to control once established.

Aphids

Usually the rose aphid (Macrosiphum rosae), clustering in green or pink masses on flower buds and soft shoot tips from April. They suck sap, excrete sticky honeydew (which then grows sooty mould) and can distort buds, but they rarely do lasting harm to an established rose.

Why black spot got worse as the air got cleaner

Gardeners who remember the mid-twentieth century often say black spot used to be rarer, and they are right. The sulphur dioxide in coal-polluted urban air acted as an accidental fungicide, suppressing the disease across towns and cities. As the Clean Air Acts took effect and air quality improved from the 1960s onwards, black spot returned everywhere. It is worth knowing this because it reframes the problem: black spot is now a normal fact of rose growing in Britain, not a sign that you are doing something wrong, and the fungus has also evolved past the resistance bred into many older "disease-resistant" varieties.

Hygiene: what helps and the compost question

Black spot and rust overwinter on fallen leaves and on lesions on the stems. Practical hygiene therefore makes a real difference:

  • Rake up and remove fallen rose leaves in autumn and again through winter — November to February — before spores splash back up in spring rain.
  • When pruning in February or March, cut out stems showing black spot lesions or rust pustules.
  • Mulch in March with a 5cm layer of garden compost or well-rotted manure. As well as feeding the rose, this buries any remaining infected leaf fragments and reduces rain-splash of spores onto new foliage.

Should diseased leaves go in the compost bin? A typical garden heap does not reliably reach the sustained temperatures needed to kill fungal spores, so the cautious answer is no: put black spot and rust foliage in your council green waste collection, which is composted commercially at high temperature, or bin it. If you run a genuinely hot heap that holds 60°C, composting them is defensible — but most heaps do not.

Pruning for airflow

Fungal diseases love still, humid air trapped in a congested bush. Prune bush roses in late February or March, when the worst frosts are past but before growth gets going:

  • Remove dead, damaged and diseased wood entirely.
  • Take out stems that cross through the centre, aiming for an open goblet shape that lets air move through the plant.
  • Cut to an outward-facing bud with a sloping cut just above it.
  • Space matters between plants too: roses jammed among crowded perennials with no air movement suffer more mildew.

Resistant varieties: the real answer

No amount of hygiene will keep a disease-prone variety clean in a wet British summer, and the amateur fungicides available today give only partial protection with repeated spraying. The single most effective decision is made at the nursery: choose modern varieties bred for disease resistance. Breeders such as David Austin, Kordes and Harkness now select heavily for it, and the difference in the garden is dramatic — some modern shrub roses stay essentially clean with no spraying at all.

When buying, look for varieties described as having excellent (not merely "good") disease resistance, ideally introduced within the last couple of decades, since the black spot fungus overcomes older resistance over time. Rugosa roses (Rosa rugosa) and many species roses are also naturally very healthy. If an old rose in your garden defoliates miserably every single year despite your best efforts, replacing it is not defeat; it is the fix.

Feeding and watering to reduce stress

A stressed rose succumbs faster. Two habits make plants noticeably more resilient:

  • Feed twice a year: a proprietary rose fertiliser or general balanced feed in late March as growth starts, and again in late June after the first flush of flowers. Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding late in the season, which produces soft growth that mildew and aphids adore.
  • Water the roots, not the leaves: in dry spells give a thorough soak at the base once or twice a week rather than frequent sprinkles. Dry roots are the main driver of powdery mildew, especially on wall-trained climbers sitting in a rain shadow — these often need watering even after rain. Wetting the foliage, by contrast, helps black spot spread, so aim the can low and water in the morning.

Aphids: wait a week before you spray

The spring aphid surge on roses looks alarming, but it is also the opening course for an arriving army of predators: ladybirds and their larvae, hoverfly larvae, lacewings, earwigs and blue tits all eat aphids in quantity. Spraying — even with organic-approved fatty acid sprays — kills these predators and their food supply together, and the aphids, which reproduce far faster, return first.

A better sequence:

  1. Squash colonies between finger and thumb, or dislodge them with a jet of water.
  2. Wait a week or two. In most gardens predators catch up by late May or June and the problem largely resolves itself.
  3. Only if buds are being visibly distorted on a young plant, spot-treat the affected shoots with a fatty-acid spray in the evening when pollinators are not flying.

Two problems that are not diseases

Balling

In prolonged wet weather, buds of full-petalled varieties can soak, then dry into a papery brown shell the flower cannot break through — the bud rots without opening. This is not an infection you can treat. Pick off balled buds to prevent grey mould setting in, and note that thin-petalled and single-flowered varieties rarely ball. If your garden is in a high-rainfall part of the country, that is worth weighing when choosing varieties.

Rose replant disease

Plant a new rose in soil where an old rose grew and it often sulks or fails, even though the same variety would thrive a metre away — a poorly understood soil problem known as replant disease. If you must reuse a spot, dig out a generous hole (at least 60cm across and deep) and swap in fresh soil from elsewhere in the garden, or plant the new rose within a large cardboard box of fresh soil which rots away as the rose establishes. Mycorrhizal fungi applied to the roots at planting may help; fresh ground is the surer answer.
