Planting

Plant in autumn or spring in soil improved with leaf mould or garden compost. It is at its best in dappled shade or a border that does not bake, and looks better in groups of three or more than as a single plant.

Pruning

Deadhead after flowering if you do not want seedlings, though the seed heads have some merit. Cut the stems down once the foliage yellows in autumn.

Propagation

Divide in early spring as growth begins — the crowns resent disturbance, so do it only when necessary and replant promptly. Seed sown fresh in autumn in a cold frame germinates reasonably well; stored seed is much less reliable.

Pests and diseases

Slugs can shred the emerging spring shoots, which is the main risk. Powdery mildew appears on plants that dry out at the root.

Value to wildlife

The fluffy heads are made of stamens rather than petals and offer pollen rather than nectar, drawing bees and hoverflies in early summer.

Notes

The aquilegia-like blue-green foliage carries the plant when it is not in flower, so it earns its space. Tall stems in an exposed spot may need discreet support, but in shelter it usually stands unaided.
