Most British gardens are watered too often, too lightly and in the wrong places — and the plants are worse for it. With hotter, drier summers now a regular feature and hosepipe bans no longer rare, learning to water well matters more than owning a better hose. The principles are few, and almost all of them mean doing less.
Deep and infrequent beats little and often
A daily sprinkle wets the top centimetre of soil and evaporates by lunchtime. Roots follow water, so lightly watered plants grow shallow roots that sit exactly where the soil dries first — making them more drought-prone, not less. A thorough soak once or twice a week pushes moisture down 15–30 cm and trains roots to follow it into the reserve that holds moisture between rains.
"Thorough" means more than feels natural: around 10 litres — a full watering can — per square metre wets the top 10 cm or so of soil. For a newly planted shrub, that is a whole can to one plant, applied slowly so it soaks in rather than running off. Check your work occasionally: an hour after watering, push a trowel in. If it is dry 5 cm down, you watered the surface, not the soil.
Water the base, morning or evening
Water the soil, not the plant. Spraying foliage wastes water to evaporation, encourages fungal diseases such as blackspot and mildew on wet leaves, and delivers little to the roots. Put the can or hose at the base of each plant, ideally into a shallow saucer of soil formed around new plantings so water pools and sinks where it is needed.
Timing: early morning is best — plants take water up as the day warms, and foliage splashed by accident dries quickly. Evening is a good second choice in hot spells, with less evaporation overnight, though soil that stays wet after dark is friendlier to slugs. Midday watering in sunshine is simply wasteful — much of it evaporates before it penetrates. (The old claim that midday droplets scorch leaves is largely myth; the real cost is the water you lose.)
New plantings need water; established plants mostly don't
This is the distinction that saves the most water and the most effort:
- First season after planting (trees, shrubs, perennials): the roots occupy only the original rootball, which dries out fast even when surrounding soil is moist. Water generously — a full can per plant — once or twice a week through any dry spell from April to September. Trees planted the previous winter need the same care through their first two summers.
- Established shrubs, trees and hedges: after two or three years in the ground, most need no routine watering at all in a normal UK summer. Their roots reach far beyond the dripline and deep into the soil. Exceptions are shallow-rooted thirsty plants in dry spells — hydrangeas, some rhododendrons and camellias (which set next year's buds in late summer) — and anything planted against a wall in a rain shadow.
- Vegetables vary: leafy crops and anything swelling a fruit (tomatoes, courgettes, runner beans) repay regular water; onions and established brassicas need far less. Watering at key stages — transplanting, flowering, fruit swell — beats blanket irrigation.
- Established lawns: never. Brown summer grass is dormant and recovers with autumn rain.
Pots: the finger test, not the calendar
Containers are the genuine exception to "water less" — they hold a small volume of compost, dry from all sides, and in July a hanging basket can need water daily. But do not water by routine; water by evidence. Push a finger a knuckle deep into the compost: if it feels moist, walk away; if dry, water until it runs from the drainage holes. Surface appearance lies — peat-free composts in particular can look dry on top while moist beneath, and conversely can shrink from the pot sides so water races down the gap and out of the bottom while the rootball stays bone dry. If that happens, stand the pot in a basin of water for half an hour to rewet it.
Reduce pot thirst at the design stage: choose the largest pots you can (small pots are relentless), avoid unglazed terracotta for thirsty plants, group pots to shade each other, mulch the compost surface with grit or bark, and move saucers under pots in summer only — in winter they cause waterlogging.
Store rain, reuse grey water
Rainwater is free, unmetered, and better than tap water for ericaceous plants (rhododendrons, camellias, blueberries), which dislike the lime in hard tap water. Fit a water butt to every downpipe you can — house, garage, shed, greenhouse. Even a modest roof sheds thousands of litres in a British year; the limiting factor is storage, so add a second butt with a linking kit if the first overflows all winter.
Grey water — from baths, showers and washing-up — is a sensible reserve in a dry summer, with rules of thumb:
- Use it on ornamentals, fruit trees and shrubs; avoid it on leafy salad and vegetable crops eaten raw, and on ericaceous plants (soap is alkaline).
- Use it fresh — within 24 hours — as stored grey water turns foul quickly.
- Household soap and detergent in normal amounts are tolerable; avoid water containing bleach, strong disinfectants or dishwasher salt.
- Rotate where you use it rather than dosing one bed all summer.
Hosepipe-ban-proofing your garden
Bans typically restrict hosepipes and sprinklers, not watering cans, so a garden designed for can-watering barely notices. The moves that matter, roughly in order of payoff:
- Mulch every bed 5–7 cm deep in spring onto moist soil — the single biggest reducer of water demand.
- Improve soil with organic matter every year; humus-rich soil holds water like a sponge on sand and opens drainage on clay.
- Plant in autumn (October–November) rather than spring, so roots establish over winter and plants face their first summer already dug in.
- Cut pot count, upsize the pots you keep, and consider drought-tolerant pot subjects — pelargoniums, sedums, lavender — over thirsty bedding.
- Install a simple drip line or seep hose under mulch for the vegetable bed (check current ban wording; drip irrigation is sometimes exempted, sometimes not).
- Prioritise ruthlessly in a ban: newly planted things first, then pots, then fruiting crops. Established borders and lawns can look after themselves.
Reading the plant: too much or too little?
Confusingly, overwatering and underwatering both show as wilting — in the first case because waterlogged roots suffocate and die, leaving the plant unable to drink. Check the soil before reaching for the can:

Chronic overwatering kills more container and house plants than drought does. When in doubt, wait a day.
The real fix: right plant, right place
Every principle above is a workaround for a mismatch between plant and site. The permanent solution is to plant what suits your conditions. A sunny, free-draining bed will support lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus), Cistus, Verbena bonariensis and sedums (Hylotelephium) with essentially no summer watering once established — most are hardy to H4 or H5 and thrive on neglect. Reserve the thirsty plants — hydrangeas, astilbes, hostas — for genuinely moist spots or accept the watering they demand. A garden matched to its soil and aspect needs the hose only for its newest arrivals, which is roughly what the next few decades of UK summers will require of all of us.
