Understanding UK hardiness ratings (RHS H1–H7)

Guidance is written for UK gardens and the UK climate. How we research and check our advice.

Every plant label carries a hardiness rating, and every winter gardeners lose plants because the rating was misread — or trusted too literally. The RHS H1–H7 scale is a genuinely useful tool for the UK climate, but only once you understand what the numbers mean, what they leave out, and how your own garden's quirks can shift a plant's real-world hardiness by a whole category in either direction.

The RHS scale at a glance

The Royal Horticultural Society's hardiness ratings run from H1 (needs a heated greenhouse) to H7 (hardy anywhere in the UK and beyond). Each rating corresponds to a band of minimum winter temperature the plant can be expected to survive:

For most of lowland Britain, H4 is the working definition of "hardy": an H4 plant should sail through a typical winter. H3 is the interesting, risky category — the salvias, olives and half-hardy exotics that survive most winters in the south and then vanish in a hard one. Anything H2 or below must come indoors before the first frost, which in much of England means by late October, earlier in the north and in frost hollows.

How this differs from USDA zones

American books and websites use USDA zones, and the two systems do not translate neatly. USDA zones are geographic: they divide the map into bands by the average annual minimum temperature of each place, and a plant is labelled with the range of zones where it survives (most of lowland Britain falls around USDA zones 8–9). The RHS system instead rates the plant, by the minimum temperature band it tolerates — no map required.

The deeper problem with borrowing USDA ratings is that they were built for a continental climate: reliably cold winters, hot summers that ripen and toughen growth, and often snow cover insulating the ground. The UK's maritime climate breaks those assumptions. Our winters are mild but wet, our summers often fail to ripen wood on borderline plants, and our temperatures yo-yo across freezing repeatedly. A plant rated for USDA zone 8 can still die in a zone 9 British garden — usually of winter wet rather than cold — so treat American ratings as a rough clue and the RHS H rating as the authority for UK conditions.

Wet cold kills differently to dry cold

The most important thing the temperature bands do not capture: in Britain, drainage is as decisive as thermometer readings. Many plants from continental or mountain climates endure -20°C happily in dry, frozen or snow-covered ground, yet rot at -5°C in a sodden British border, because saturated soil suffocates and freezes roots and encourages fungal rots at the crown. Lavender, rosemary, Cistus, penstemons, kniphofias, agapanthus and most grey-leaved and silver plants are all far hardier in sharply drained soil than in heavy wet clay — often by a full H category in practice. The practical responses:

  • Give borderline plants the best-drained spot you have: a raised bed, a slope, a gravel garden, or planting on a slight mound with grit worked in beneath.
  • Mulch crowns of vulnerable perennials with an airy, dry material (bracken, straw, bark) rather than a wet blanket of compost.
  • Never plant borderline-hardy things in autumn on heavy soil; wait until April or May so they get a full growing season to establish before facing winter wet.

Microclimates: your garden is not one climate

Hardiness ratings assume open ground in an average situation, but a single garden can span the practical difference between H3 and H5 conditions:

  • South- and west-facing walls store daytime heat and release it at night, and keep rain off the ground at their base. The classic place for an olive, fig or Ceanothus a rating too tender for your area.
  • Frost pockets: cold air flows downhill like water and pools at the lowest point, behind solid fences and hedges across a slope, or at the bottom of the garden. These spots frost earlier, harder and later into spring — check where frost lingers on the lawn on a cold morning.
  • Urban heat: city-centre gardens routinely run a few degrees warmer on cold nights than open country, which is why bananas and tree ferns survive in London courtyards but not rural Lincolnshire.
  • Coastal gardens rarely see severe frost thanks to the sea's warmth — H3 plants often thrive — but pay for it in salt-laden wind.
  • Overhead canopy: evergreen branches or even a house eave reduce radiation frost beneath them; the shelter of other shrubs can carry a borderline plant through.

Learn your garden's cold map over one winter and you can plant a whole category more ambitiously in its warm corners.

Wind chill, exposure — and the special danger of pots

Wind chill as felt on human skin does not lower the actual temperature a plant experiences, but wind still does real damage: it strips moisture from evergreen leaves faster than frozen roots can replace it, browning and scorching foliage (windburn), and it destroys the insulating layer of still air around a plant. Exposed gardens should knock a notional grade off tender evergreens' ratings, and windbreaks — hedges and permeable screens, not solid walls that create turbulence — genuinely improve effective hardiness.

Containers deserve their own warning. Ratings assume roots insulated deep in the ground; in a pot, the rootball is surrounded by air on all sides and can freeze solid, so a plant reliably hardy in the border can die in a container in the same garden. In a hard freeze: cluster pots together against a warm wall, wrap the pots (not necessarily the plants) in hessian or bubble wrap, stand them on pot feet so drainage holes are not sealed against sodden paving, and consider moving the most precious into a porch, cold greenhouse or shed for the worst spells. Frost-fragile terracotta is a separate casualty to avoid.

Reading a plant label intelligently

Faced with a label saying "H3 — hardy in mild regions", run through a quick checklist:

  1. Where am I? A sheltered Cornish or central-London garden can treat H3 as reliable; a Pennine, Aberdeenshire or frost-hollow garden should treat even H4 with respect.
  2. What is my soil? Sharp drainage adds resilience; wet clay subtracts it.
  3. Where in the garden would it go? Warm wall or open bed? Frost pocket or raised terrace?
  4. Ground or pot? If a pot, mentally downgrade the rating and plan winter protection.
  5. How replaceable is it? A £3 salvia is a fair gamble; a £150 olive tree deserves the best microclimate you have, or a different decision.

Beware vague label language on imported stock — "hardy" with no rating, or "protect from frost", tells you little. Look the plant up by botanical name for its RHS rating before buying anything borderline.

Protecting borderline plants through winter

With modest effort, most gardeners can keep H3 plants alive through most winters in much of the UK:

  • Timing: have protection ready from late October; the first serious frosts typically arrive in November in the south, October further north. Do not wrap plants prematurely in mild autumns — trapped damp does harm too.
  • Fleece: one or two layers of horticultural fleece thrown over on forecast frost nights and removed in mild spells is better than sealing plants up until March. Fleece the top growth of tree ferns and bananas; pack the crown of a tree fern (Dicksonia antarctica) with straw.
  • Dry mulch over the crowns of dahlias (if left in the ground in mild areas), agapanthus and kniphofias, applied in November.
  • Cuttings as insurance: take cuttings of penstemons, tender salvias and pelargoniums in August–September and overwinter the young plants on a windowsill or in a frost-free greenhouse. It is the cheapest hardiness strategy of all.
  • Leave top growth on borderline perennials and shrubs until April — the dead material shelters the crown, and spring pruning avoids stimulating soft growth before the last frosts, which can run into May in northern and inland gardens.
  • Watch the forecast, not the calendar: named cold spells and northerly outbreaks are when H3 plants die, and a single night's fleece at the right moment is worth a winter of habit.
