Sandy soil is a joy to dig in February and a heartbreak in July. It drains beautifully, warms early and never sticks to your boots — but it also lets water and nutrients pour straight through, leaving plants hungry and thirsty by midsummer. Gardening well on sand means working with those facts: building organic matter little and often, mulching relentlessly, and leaning into the superb range of plants that call this soil home.
Understanding what sand does
Sand particles are large — up to a thousand times the size of clay particles — and roughly spherical, so a sandy soil is full of big pore spaces. Water moves through fast, taking dissolved nutrients with it: nitrogen and potassium in particular leach away with every heavy rain, which is why sandy soils are traditionally called "hungry". There is little clay or organic matter to grip nutrients, and little water held in reserve, so plants feel drought within days of rain stopping.
The advantages are just as real. Sandy soil drains freely, so roots never sit in winter wet — the biggest killer of borderline-hardy plants in the UK. It warms up quickly in spring, often allowing sowing and planting two or three weeks ahead of clay districts. It is light and workable in any month, and root vegetables grow long and straight in it. To confirm you have sand, rub a moist pinch between your fingers: it feels gritty, will not roll into a sausage, and falls apart when you open your hand.
Organic matter: little and often, forever
The improvement strategy for sand is the same as for clay — add organic matter — but the rhythm is different. In free-draining, well-aerated, warm sandy soil, organic matter oxidises and disappears remarkably fast. A single heroic barrow-load dug in at the start will be largely gone within a couple of seasons. What works is little and often: a modest 3–5 cm layer of garden compost, well-rotted manure, leafmould or composted bark spread over beds every single year, ideally twice on the vegetable plot. Each addition improves the soil's ability to hold water and nutrients like a sponge, and each is a top-up, not a cure.
There is no need to dig it in; on sand, worms incorporate surface-applied material quickly, and leaving the soil undisturbed slows the burn-rate of the organic matter you have already banked. Almost any bulky organic material helps, and quantity over refinement is the rule — this is the soil for making friends with a local stable. Green manures earn their keep too: sow phacelia, buckwheat or crimson clover on empty vegetable ground in August–September, and cut them down and leave the residue in spring. They mop up nutrients that would leach over winter and hand them back to the next crop, while their roots add fibre. Legume green manures fix nitrogen — a genuine free lunch on hungry sand.
Mulch like you mean it
On sandy soil, bare earth is a leak. Mulching does three jobs at once: it slows evaporation from the surface, it buffers soil temperature (sand gets hot in summer), and as organic mulches break down they feed the soil. Apply mulch in mid-spring — late March or April — when the soil is moist after winter but warming, so you seal moisture in rather than sealing drought out. Top up as needed rather than by calendar.
- Organic mulches — compost, bark, leafmould, woodchip — for beds and borders. These are the default because they improve the soil as they vanish.
- Gravel mulch — 2–3 cm of gravel or shingle around Mediterranean plants, alpines and silver-leaved plants. It conserves moisture below while keeping the vulnerable neck of the plant dry, which those plants prefer.
- Living mulch — dense ground-cover planting shades the soil the rest of the year. Bare gaps between well-spaced plants are where sandy soils lose most.
Watering strategy: deep, infrequent, targeted
Frequent light sprinkling is the classic sandy-soil mistake: it wets the top centimetre, encourages roots to loiter at the surface, and evaporates by lunchtime. Instead, water thoroughly but less often — a real soak once or twice a week in dry spells beats a daily splash — so moisture reaches deep and roots follow it down. Water in the evening or early morning to cut evaporation losses. Prioritise ruthlessly: new plantings in their first year, vegetables at their critical stages (potatoes when tubers form, beans and courgettes when flowering and cropping), and containers. Established ornamentals chosen sensibly for sand should need almost nothing.
Make the ground do the work. Sunken pots or a length of pipe beside thirsty plants deliver water straight to the roots; a shallow saucer-shaped depression around each new tree or shrub holds water where it is needed instead of letting it sheet away. Seep hoses snaked under mulch are far more efficient than sprinklers on sand. And install the biggest water butts you can fit — a dry spring on sandy soil will empty them.
Feeding a hungry soil
Because nutrients leach so readily, feeding on sand follows the same rule as organic matter: little and often beats a single generous dose, most of which will wash past the roots. In practice:
- Base fertility on organic matter first; fertiliser tops it up, it does not replace it.
- Apply general fertilisers — fish, blood and bone, chicken manure pellets, or a balanced granular feed — in March or April as growth starts, not in autumn or winter when there are no active roots to catch the nutrients before rain removes them.
- Repeat modest applications through the growing season for hungry crops rather than doubling the spring dose.
- Watch for magnesium deficiency, common on light acid sands: yellowing between the veins of older leaves, especially on tomatoes and roses. Epsom salts as a soil or foliar application corrects it.
- Potassium also leaches readily; comfrey feed or a high-potash tomato feed helps flowering and fruiting plants in summer.
Plants that love sandy soil
The honest shortcut on sand is to plant things that evolved on free-draining ground, then barely water or feed them at all. The Mediterranean shrubby herbs and their companions are the heart of the list:
- Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia, and the slightly tender L. stoechas), rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus), thyme (Thymus vulgaris), sage (Salvia officinalis) and oregano — all better on poor sand than on rich clay, with stronger scent and longer lives.
- Rock roses (Cistus × purpureus, C. ladanifer) and their smaller cousins Halimium, revelling in hot dry banks.
- Sedum (now Hylotelephium 'Herbstfreude' and kin), sempervivums and other succulents.
- Grasses: Stipa tenuissima, S. gigantea, Festuca glauca, Pennisetum and blue lyme grass. Most ornamental grasses prefer sharp drainage.
- Silver and grey foliage generally — Artemisia, Santolina chamaecyparissus, Perovskia (Russian sage), Phlomis fruticosa — the felted leaves are drought equipment.
- Perennials: Achillea, Echinops, sea hollies (Eryngium), Verbena bonariensis, red valerian (Centranthus ruber), Gaura lindheimeri and pinks (Dianthus).
- Bulbs thrive in the sharp drainage: tulips persist on sand as they rarely do on clay, and alliums, nerines and Amaryllis belladonna enjoy a summer baking.
- Shrubs and trees: brooms (Cytisus), Potentilla fruticosa, sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides), tamarisk, junipers, silver birch (Betula pendula) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) — the last two being what nature plants on British sands.
On the vegetable plot, sand is prime ground for carrots, parsnips, beetroot, early potatoes, onions, garlic and asparagus. Thirsty leafy crops — runner beans, celery, brassicas, courgettes — are possible but will demand the most compost and water you can give them.
A realistic plan for the first three years
- Year one: test pH (sands are often acid), start compost bins, mulch everything in April, plant drought-tolerant backbone shrubs in autumn (September–October, so winter rain establishes them free of charge).
- Year two: repeat the spring mulch, add green manures to empty vegetable ground in late summer, extend planting — watering new plants through their first summer only.
- Year three onwards: the annual mulch is now routine, the soil is visibly darker and holds moisture longer, and the garden increasingly waters and feeds itself. Keep going; on sand the improvement lasts only as long as the habit does.
