The idea that fruit trees need an orchard is decades out of date: modern rootstocks and trained forms mean a productive apple can live in a border, a large pot, or flat against a fence. But a fruit tree is a twenty-year decision made in one afternoon, and the two things that matter most — the rootstock and the pollination arrangements — are printed in small type on the label. Understand those before you buy and everything else is straightforward.
Rootstocks: the hidden half of the tree
Almost every fruit tree sold is two plants: a fruiting variety grafted onto a rootstock, and it is the rootstock, not the variety, that decides the tree's final size, how soon it fruits, and whether it needs a permanent stake. 'Bramley' on a dwarfing rootstock is a very different proposition from 'Bramley' on a vigorous one.
For apples (Malus domestica), the common options in ascending size:

The strongly dwarfing stocks (M27, M9) fruit young — often in their second or third year — but have small, brittle root systems, which is why they keep their stake for life and sulk in poor, dry soil. In a small garden, M9 or M26 for a free-standing tree and M9 or M26 for cordons is a sensible default; MM106 if you have room for something more substantial or want to train an espalier.
Other fruits follow the same logic with different names: pears on Quince A or the smaller Quince C; plums and gages on Pixy (small, around 3m) or the larger St Julien A; cherries on Gisela 5, which finally made garden cherries pickable without a ladder and nettable against blackbirds. All the common tree fruits are fully hardy in the UK (H6), though their blossom is not — more on that below.
Pollination: will it actually set fruit?
Most apples and pears need pollen from a different variety that flowers at the same time. Catalogues handle this with pollination groups — numbers (1–7, sometimes A–D) ordering varieties from earliest blossom to latest. A tree will cross-pollinate with anything in its own group or the neighbouring ones; a group 3 apple pairs happily with groups 2, 3 or 4.
In practice, in towns and suburbs there are usually enough apple trees (and crab apples, which are excellent pollinators) within bee range that a lone apple sets fruit anyway. In an isolated rural garden, plan properly: plant two compatible varieties, or choose self-fertile ones.
- Reliably self-fertile: most modern plums and gages, notably 'Victoria'; the cherry 'Stella'; peaches and apricots; quince.
- Partially or fully self-fertile apples: 'James Grieve', 'Red Falstaff', 'Scrumptious' — all crop better still with a partner.
- Awkward customers: triploid varieties such as 'Bramley's Seedling' and 'Blenheim Orange' need two other varieties nearby (their own pollen is sterile), so they are a poor choice as the only tree in a small garden.
- Pears are less commonly grown, so do not count on the neighbours: 'Conference' is partially self-fertile and the safest single pear.
One more timing point: early-flowering fruit — pears, plums, and especially peaches and apricots — blossoms in March and April when frosts are still common, and a frosted blossom is a lost crop. In cold or northern gardens, favour late-flowering apple varieties and give early bloomers the most sheltered spot you have.
Planting a bare-root tree, November to March
Bare-root trees, sold dormant between November and March, are cheaper than containerised ones, offer a far wider choice of varieties from specialist nurseries, and establish at least as well. Plant them in a mild spell any time in that window — November and December are ideal, giving roots all winter to settle. If the ground is frozen or waterlogged on delivery, heel the tree into a spare patch of soil or keep the roots damp and frost-free until conditions improve.
- Soak the roots in a bucket of water for an hour or two before planting.
- Dig a hole no deeper than the roots but wider — a square hole about three times the root spread, with the sides loosened by a fork. Do not add compost or fertiliser to the hole; roots establish better heading out into native soil.
- Drive the stake in first (see below), on the side of the prevailing wind, so you are not skewering roots afterwards.
- Set the tree at its original depth, using the soil mark on the stem — and make absolutely certain the graft union, the visible bulge low on the stem, sits at least 8–10cm above the final soil level. Bury the graft and the variety may root itself, cancelling the rootstock's dwarfing effect.
- Backfill in stages, shaking the stem gently so soil settles between the roots, and firm each layer with your heel.
- Water in thoroughly — a full can even in winter — and mulch a metre-wide circle 5–7cm deep, kept clear of the trunk.
If rabbits or deer visit, add a trunk guard on day one, not after the first bark damage.
Staking and tying
A newly planted tree needs its roots held still while they knit into the soil; the top can and should move. A short stake — one-third of the tree's height, driven in at a 45-degree angle or vertically beside the stem — does this best, fixed to the trunk with a proper tree tie and spacer buffer. Check the tie every spring and slacken it as the trunk thickens; a forgotten tie will strangle a tree in two or three seasons.
Trees on MM106 or larger can lose the stake after two to three years. Trees on M27 and M9 keep a stake permanently — their root systems never anchor a cropping tree against an autumn gale. Trained forms are supported by their wires instead.
Trained forms for walls and fences
Training turns vertical surfaces into productive space and is the neatest answer to a genuinely small garden.
- Cordon: a single stem, usually planted at 45 degrees, carrying fruit on short spurs. Cordons stand only 75cm apart, so a 3m fence takes four different apple varieties — the best fruit-per-square-metre arrangement there is. Apples and pears on dwarfing stocks (M9, M26, Quince C) suit it; summer pruning in August keeps them compact.
- Espalier: a central trunk with horizontal tiers of branches trained along wires. Handsome, classical, productive; needs a wall or fence at least 1.8m wide and a few years of patient training, or buy a pre-trained tree. Apples and pears only — stone fruit dislikes the hard framework pruning.
- Fan: branches radiating from a short trunk, the traditional form for plums, cherries, peaches and apricots against a warm wall. A south- or west-facing fan is the only realistic way to ripen peaches and apricots outdoors in most of the UK.
- Stepover: a single horizontal tier at knee height on M27 — an edible edging for a vegetable bed, more charming than heavy-cropping.
All trained forms need horizontal wires (vine eyes and 2mm galvanised wire at roughly 40cm spacings) fixed before planting, and a commitment to summer pruning; the training itself is not difficult, just regular.
The first year: what the tree needs from you
- Water generously through the first spring and summer — 20 litres a week in dry spells beats a daily sprinkle. Drought stress in year one is the top cause of failure.
- Keep a metre-wide circle weed- and grass-free, topped with mulch. Grass is a fierce competitor for water and nitrogen at exactly the root depth a young tree occupies.
- Remove most fruit in the first year. Painful but right: let a heavily blossoming maiden set fruit and it puts its energy into a handful of apples instead of roots and framework. Leave two or three fruits at most to taste the variety.
- Prune lightly for shape — apples and pears in winter (December–February), but plums and cherries only in summer (June–July) to avoid silver leaf disease, which infects through winter pruning cuts.
- Watch the tie, the guard and the graft each time you pass.
Realistic expectations for first fruit
Dwarf trees are quick: an apple on M27 or M9 typically gives a small picking in year two or three and useful crops from year four. M26 and MM106 take a year or two longer to start but end up cropping far more heavily. Pears are slower than apples — the old saying about planting pears for your heirs overstates it, but four to six years to meaningful crops is normal. Plums and cherries on modern stocks usually fruit within three to four years; peaches and apricots can be surprisingly quick when the frost spares the blossom.
Expect variation too: many apples crop biennially to some degree, heavy one year and light the next, which thinning in June softens. And expect losses to birds, wasps, codling moth and June drop — a garden tree that reliably feeds the household and the wildlife on top is succeeding, not failing.
